The definition of ballet is an artistic dance performed as a theatrical entertainment by a number of persons. The art of Ballet can trace its origins to the early seventeenth century, when dancers performed to entertain audiences between scenes of an opera. Russia has become the international center of ballet, combining the strength and fervour of Italian style with the softness and fluidity of the French school. Choreographers experiment with both new and traditional forms and styles, and dancers constantly seek to expand their technical and theatrical capabilities. Much of a ballet dancers training takes place at a barre. Ballets can be performed alone or as part of an opera. Ballet is best known for its high level techniques such as pointe work, grand pas de deux, and high leg extensions.

Creative movement uses body actions to: communicate an image (the wind), communicate an idea (a journey) or communicate a feeling (strength).Creative Movement provides children with opportunities for non-competitive, success-oriented and creative experiences. Through movement, children learn about their bodies, the space around them, and each other. Creative movement activities should encourage all children to participate. Both boys and girls enjoy these classes. All children can benefit, including children with communication, sensory, developmental or physical challenges.

  • Jazz   ( 7 Articles )

JazzJazz dance is a dynamic and ever changing dance form always open to snapping up new ideas and soaking up the latest cultural styles. It is a blend of two movements; folk dance of Africa, North and South America and Europe and the theatre dance developed from modern, ballet, and ethnic dance. Today Jazz dance is still in a state of growth and change as it continues to mirror modern-day society. It moves with our ever-changing society and eagerly incorporates new challenges in music, movement, and thought. Jazz dance customs will continue to flourish and expand as Jazz teachers, choreographers, students, and enthusiasts embrace this art form and pass it onto upcoming generations with enthusiasm. Jazz class will include warm-up, barre, stretching, isolations, and across the floor jumps, turns, and combinations.

  • Tap   ( 7 Articles )

tap dancerTap, although not called that at that time, began as a result of early African slaves communicating over long distances with the use of drums. Slaveholders already afraid of revolt forbid the use of drums thus forcing the African-Americans to transfer these rhythms to their feet. Through the years tap has evolved from “classical tap” performed by Bill “Bo jangles” Robinson, a style of tap danced high on the balls of the feet to “Flash tap” performed by the Nicholas Brothers, Harold and Fayard Nicholas, a flashy style of tap that included spectacular tricks integrated into tap phrases to the “new generation tap” performed by such greats as Savion Glover, this hip-hop-funk style of tap, sometimes called “power tapping” has brought tap in harmony with the music of today. This style of tap is distinguished by dense, hard-hitting rhythms. Eye contact is rarely made with the audience as the focus is on finding the groove. Tap embraces a range of diverse and individual styles both multiracial and intergenerational. It has truly earned it’s due as a dynamic and ever-changing art form.

  • Lyrical   ( 1 Article )

lyricalLyrical dance embraces the components of Ballet, Jazz, and Modern. It uses the lyrics of a song and the feelings from your heart and body to make the movements come to life. Like Jazz it is a mélange of styles while it’s foundation is in Ballet and Technique. Strong ballet technique is necessary for this dance style. We recommend students taking lyrical should have previous ballet training as well as continuing ballet class in addition to the Lyrical class. Lyrical includes barre, center, and across the floor work.
